LGBTQ+ Housing Pledge: Training for our colleagues

LGBTQ+ Housing Pledge: Training for our colleagues

Thursday, 05 June 2025

As part of our work towards achieving the LGBTQ+ Housing Pledge, we organised training sessions by Stonewall Housing for our repairs and housing teams. These teams assist with repairs in our customers' homes, with queries when they call us or visit reception, rent payments, neighbourhood issues and ASB, and support for customers in sheltered or supported homes. We arranged two types of sessions:

Toolbox Talk: LGBTQ+ Awareness for Maintenance Operatives

  • The 'No Place Like Home' report found that 21% of LGBTQ+ people felt uncomfortable with repairs operatives in their homes.
  • The session provided insights into the lives of LGBTQ+ people in the UK, highlighting housing and homelessness challenges and promoting best practices for supporting LGBTQ+ customers.

LGBTQ+ Experiences of Housing and Homelessness

  • This workshop shared lessons from supporting LGBTQ+ individuals facing homelessness or unsafe living conditions.
  • It aimed to increase understanding of the impact of homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia on LGBTQ+ communities and shared best practices for providing inclusive and supportive services.

Our Repairs Operations Manager, Jack, shared his reflections on the session:

'I found the session particularly engaging.

'The explanation of specific anxieties and trepidation about repairs teams going into the homes of people who identify as LGBTQ+ was insightful, but also gave some insight into what individuals and companies can do to understand and combat some of these feelings.

'I believe that everyone came out of this session with more information than they came in with.'

Our Head of Housing, Zayna, shared the following reflections of the session:

'I recently attended LGBTQ+ training, and it was incredibly insightful. The facilitator, Alex, was welcoming and created a safe space for open dialogue and learning.

'I walked away with a better understanding of identity, inclusivity, and lived experiences, reminding me of the importance of person-centred approach.'

We hope to build on this training to allow us to ensure that we provide inclusive services for our LGBTQ+ customers.
