Sustainable transport

Green ways to get around

Cycle routes, public transport and more

The majority of your household carbon footprint comes from your home. From gas, electricity and waste.

After that, transport is the next biggest thing. Even if you never step on a plane, 34% of your footprint will come from your everyday commuting and travel.

Plus - with petrol prices these days - relying on your car isn’t great for your wallet either. So, here are some other options...

Cycling

We’re in a great area for cycling.

So much so, Cheshunt is the hometown of Olympic medallist, Laura Kenny.

Those of us with smaller ambitions still have lots of options.

Here’s a quick selection of cycle routes our area:

  • Hoddesdon, Hertford and Welwyn Garden City – click here
  • Cheshunt, Enfield, Lea Valley and into London – click here
  • Ware and Welwyn Garden City – click here
  • Bishops Stortford and Essex – click here

Or you can check out the Sustrans website for maps of all the routes in the East of England. You can also follow this link to find out more about where to find cycle routes and free pumps in Broxbourne.

Trains

If you need to go further, trains are the best form of transport for your carbon footprint.

National Rail will give you the times and prices for train journeys across the UK. You can also search on your postcode if you don’t know the nearest station.

Bus

Taking a bus gives off half the greenhouse gases of travelling by car on your own.

In our area, most buses are run by Arriva or Central Connect depending on where you live.

If you’re not use which buses run in your area or where the stops are, check the Bus Times or the Intalink websites.

What we’re doing

When we build new homes, we look for opportunities to support public transport, cycling and electric cars.

For example, our Cheshunt Lakeside development has 40 car charging points as well as cycle paths and bus routes.

Also, when we build new estates, we look to provide bike stores.

Monitor your carbon footprint

Sometimes, it helps to see exactly how much of a difference you’re making.

You can download free apps to track how green your travel is. For example, try the Green Travel app.
